xorg.confを生成しようとしているので、次のようにしました。

sudo service gdm stop
[ Move away xorg.conf.back and xorg.conf.fglrx-0 that were in /etc/X11 ]
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
sudo X -configure
